TIGRAYANS

Tigray, a region in northern Ethiopia, is home to the Tigrayan people, who cherish a rich cultural and historical heritage. With a population of about 7 million, they speak Tigrinya and have deep ties to the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, known for its obelisks, historic churches, and inscriptions. Tigrayan culture is marked by vibrant music, the energetic Eskista dance, and intricate handwoven garments.

Agriculture, particularly the cultivation of teff and sorghum, shapes Tigray’s terraced landscapes, while its cuisine, featuring injera and spicy stews, highlights its unique flavors. The region’s dramatic landscapes, like the Simien Mountains and the Gheralta cliffs, are breathtaking and historically significant.

Despite recent hardships, the Tigrayan people remain resilient, celebrating traditions such as Meskel and Timkat, which unite communities. As they look toward a future of healing, Tigray stands as a testament to cultural richness and enduring strength.

Policy on Human Rights Protection in Tigrayans

Northern Justice Watch is committed to protecting human rights globally, emphasizing accountability for crimes against humanity. We are aware of the ongoing deterioration and allegations of crimes against humanity and genocide against Tigrayans. We focus our attention and resources on fostering justice and accountability for Tigrayan newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization. To achieve this, we will, among other things:

Monitor, document, and publicly report on human rights violations toward Tigrayans by relying on evidence-based findings and remaining impartial in our documentation;
Provide advocacy and support tailored to Tigrayan newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization, with a specific focus on the protection of women and children;
Form strategic partnerships with other organizations and government bodies at all levels to provide relief to Tigrayan newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization;
Engage in interventions to facilitate the opening of investigations and other redress-seeking processes for Tigrayan newcomers and survivors seeking support from our organization.

We are deeply concerned with the human rights situation toward Tigrayans. We urge government bodies at all levels to investigate the allegations of serious atrocity crimes against Tigrayans. We unwaveringly believe in the dignity and worth of every individual and are committed to restoring justice and accountability for Tigrayans.
