Dr. Kersten is a renowned expert in international justice. He currently serves as a Senior Consultant at the Wayamo Foundation and is an Assistant Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of the Fraser Valley\, British Columbia.  \n\n\n\nMark’s groundbreaking work focuses on:  \n\n\n\n\nThe investigation and prosecution of international crimes\n\n\n\nMass atrocity response and prevention\n\n\n\nThe role and impact of the International Criminal Court (ICC)\n\n\n\nTransitional justice in conflict zones \n\n\n\nDomestic accountability for war crimes\n\n\n\n\nHe is the founder of the widely respected blog Justice in Conflict\, and the author of Justice in Conflict: The Effects of the ICC’s Interventions on Ending Wars and Building Peace\, published by Oxford University Press. \n\n\n\nHis writing has been featured in The Globe and Mail\, Foreign Policy\, The Washington Post\, and numerous academic publications. Through a series of community-based seminars\, the LIVE Project equips participants with knowledge of Canadian legal rights\, international human rights laws\, and avenues for justice. Since 2014\, thousands of Yazidis have been killed\, and survivors still suffer from the impact of these atrocities. Despite widespread recognition of the genocide\, justice and accountability efforts remain limited. This workshop in Düsseldorf\, led by Northern Justice Watch (NJW)\, will focus on strategies for prosecuting those responsible for these crimes and ensuring sustained accountability on an international scale. \nWorkshop Objectives: \nJustice and Accountability for Perpetrators: \n\n\n 	Formulate strategies for prosecuting individuals responsible for the genocide against the Yazidi community.\n 	Establish a working group with legal experts\, community representatives\, and advocates dedicated to advancing accountability.\n 	Explore avenues for raising awareness and advocating for international support for justice efforts.\n\n \nResource Mobilization and Team Building: \n\n\n 	Identify funding sources and resources to support legal and advocacy efforts.\n 	Create a dedicated team to oversee the implementation of strategies developed during the workshop.\n\n \nWorkshop Format: \nThe workshop will feature round-table discussions designed to promote collaboration and develop concrete steps. Since the August 2014 ISIS attacks\, thousands of Yazidi women and girls have been kidnapped\, subjected to violence\, and are still missing. Although the genocide has been internationally acknowledged\, there is an urgent need to locate these missing individuals and reunite them with their families. \nThis workshop in Paris\, initiated by Northern Justice Watch (NJW)\, aims to focus specifically on the international investigation efforts required to locate missing Yazidi women and girls\, foster collaboration among international experts\, and develop a roadmap for sustained action. \nWorkshop Objectives: \n\nDevelop a collaborative roadmap to locate missing Yazidi women and girls.\nEngage international partners and secure the necessary resources for an effective investigation.\nTackle the legal\, logistical\, and emotional challenges involved in identifying missing persons.\nEstablish a working group to drive forward accountability initiatives\, including legal experts and community representatives.\nExplore avenues for advocacy and raising awareness to ensure sustained international support for these efforts.\n\nResource Mobilization and Team Building: \n\nIdentify financial resources and potential funding sources to support investigative efforts.\nCreate a dedicated team to oversee the implementation of the roadmap and to continue the work beyond the workshop.\nFacilitate a space for participants to share insights and forge partnerships to support these goals.\n\nWorkshop Format: \nThis workshop will function as a round-table discussion\, allowing for direct interaction and collaborative problem-solving among participants.
